Pharma did make money, and by achieving widespread acceptance, they create a future market for new formulations. The fact that the existing antidepressants don't solve people's problems means people will always be in search of a new one that will. Pharma will be there to meet that need.

The physical deterioration might be from the drugs themselves, or from the numbing of the human spirit that might otherwise expend effort to improve their lives through fitness and healthy eating. Our antidepressant epidemic tracks very nicely with our obesity epidemic. Pharma is there to treat that problem too.
